Koh Samui is one of the most vital tourist spots located in the Gulf of Thailand. Its luxurious beaches and tropical splendor make it the ideal venue for art-related events such as Samui International Body Painting Competition.

Held last March in front of The Buddy Oriental Samui Beach Resort on Lamai Beach, the theme of the competition was "Preserve the Paradise." There was no entry fee charged to any of the colorful contestants.

Such festivals have occurred in both Europe (Germany) and North America (Canada) over the course of the last decade, but the scope of this gathering was much more expansive, drawing artists and models from as far away as Romania, The United States, South Korea, Spain and The United Kingdom.

The purpose of the exhibition, beyond the exposure of vivid colors and alluring body shapes, was to stimulate an international interest in Thailand's artistic vision and tourist industry.

The audience did not function solely as voyeur in this unusual competition. They participated as well, both in body and face painting as well as painting on fingernails, with henna, on dolls and on recycled goods.

Guests were free to express themselves, even if that entailed just being a spectator on the sidelines enjoying the view and a few drinks.

Next year brings another festival and another unique opportunity to express one's own individuality amid tropical breezes and colorful displays.

Check out the video below depicting some of the events at this amazing and unusual festival.

Buddha Tattoos In Thailand Are Not For Visitors

If Thailand's Culture Minister, Niphit Intharasombat, gets his way, tattoo parlors will be off limits to the millions of foreigners who visit the Southeast Asian nation every year.

The Culture Ministry firmly believes that foreigners inking images of Buddha and other sacred images onto their non-Buddhist skins, is highly insensitive to a nation comprised mostly of Buddhists.

Tourists visiting Thailand are known as farangs and Thais are aware that belief systems are different. Still in all, they should be respected and in this vein, tattoos of religious images are cultural no-nos for those on the outside looking in.

A Buddha tattoo, which is known as Sak Yant, has special meaning and is written in the holy language of Sanskrit. Usually, a Buddhist monk or a Brahmin priest makes them. Thais believe these religious tattoos grant strength and power to the bearer. For this reason, they are very popular among Thai boxers.

"Foreigners see these tattoos as a fashion… They do not think of respecting religion, or they may not be aware that it can be offensive," said Niphit, who has requested that all tattoo parlors throughout Thailand refrain from the practice of etching sacred images on foreigners.

Niphit has also attempted to thwart this controversial practice on local levels by ordering provincial governors to inspect these tattoo studios to make sure they cooperate with the demands of the ministry.

Although he is vigorously seeking to push a law to ban this practice, Niphit can go no further because tattooing religious images is not considered illegal under Thai law.

Cultural sensitivities run deep and even if they are not understood they should be respected.

One can only speculate what the great Buddha would have to say about all of this.

Giant Crocodile Wanted for Murder in Philippines Finally Captured

A monster crocodile that has been terrorizing the quiet village of Agusan in the Philippines has finally been silenced, thanks to the work of a number of villagers.

The crocodile, which checks in at 21 feet long from tip of the snout to the tip of its tail, was caught after killing one village fisherman and a water buffalo. The hunt lasted three weeks, and after several failed attempts, the villagers finally hauled it to shore using a net made of steel cables.

Mayor Edwin Elorde stated "We were very nervous about tackling this beast but it was our duty to deal with it because it was a threat to many villagers and their farm animals. When I finally saw it after its capture I couldn't believe my eyes. It was big enough to swallow three men all at once."

The crocodile required about 100 men to haul it up onto the shore, where it was placed by crane onto a large truck to be transported to…an eco-tourism park?

The crocodile is set to become the big attraction at a theme park in Agusan, which one can only imagine is a huge slap in the face of the family of the fisherman who was, well, eaten by the crocodile.

Weird Asia News: Reinvented Japanese Arcades: Bring Your Own Games

Reinvented Japanese Arcades: Bring Your Own Games

Retro game bars have slowly seeped into Japanese popular culture during the last decade.

The concept of playing on the game consoles until you get so drunk that you fall down on your face has a limited but nevertheless growing appeal all across Japan.

Many of the bars have special feature such as games where a player can interact with the voice actors who serve the alcohol. Reminiscent of the American restaurant without a liquor license that features a bring your own bottle (BYOB) policy, there are also a few places where you can bring your own alcohol and your own games as well!

The modern Japanese arcade does not rely on appearances to attract customers. The Akihabara Shukaijo ("shukaijo" meaning "assembly hall") is nothing special to look at. The walls are white, the sofas cramped and cheap. Usually, there is a proliferation of wooden chairs and several tatami mats in the corner.

Enter and game is the mantra at the Portable Game Cafe. No frills here, but plenty of thrills. You bring your own game machines, which are usually PSPs and Nintendo handhelds. Tabletop gaming and card games are welcome as well as long as they don't disturb other patrons.

These gaming cafes are a direct outgrowth of forced leisure time created by the mile and miles of train tracks that provide long breaks during commutes. When people miss the last train home, they can pass the time by gaming and catching few winks on the tatami mats provided.

This new arcade concept caters to the serious gamers. Unlike manga cafes, everything is in the open and the goal is simply to gather and game.

So, why not do so and save money at the same time?

Why not indeed!
